Lapnos Dokumentaryo ni Jay Taruc I-Witness, May 21, 2012   Scarred flesh... agonizing pain... screams that can be heard from blocks away... These are not scenes from a horror movie. These are disturbing images in one of the busiest hospital  burn  units in the Philippines . As part of their daily grind, the doctors, nurses, and technicians of the Mindanao Burn Center in Davao treat burn victims with special care.  Patients agonize over their injuries as staff members carefully  dress their wounds. For Cristy, an 11 year old, life will never be the same. Her face  along with half of her body were severely burned due to an accident with a gas lamp. She can hardly look at her old pictures because doesn't want to be reminded of what she once looked like. Sometimes, she says, she feels like dying from the pain. Kerby, 4 years old, is a victim of a motorcycle accident. The young boy now dreads taking a bath because that  would mean  more excruciating pain. Cleansing wounds with water and soap is often the first step in treating burns, a procedure that is  almost  unbearable for the patients , much more for this young boy. Jay Taruc also  met patients  whose burn injuries were caused by bombing and explosions - occurences not uncommon in the area due to armed conflicts. I-Witness presents a poignant documentary that unravels the stories of burn victims in this seemingly forgotten part of Mindanao. Don't miss this 2012  New York Festivals Television and Film Awards silver medalist episode this Monday after Saksi.
