A hostage incident in Cagayan province ended peacefully Friday after a man suffering from depression took a child hostage eventually yielded to police.

Police did not name the man, who they said had kept his own wife "hostage" inside their house earlier this week, Amulung town police head Chief Inspector Erick Gumarang said.

"(Yung) misis ikinukulong, ayaw palabasin... dalawang araw na kinukulong ayon sa mga kapitbahay. 'Pag lumalabas, ang misis sinasamahan.... Kaninang umaga, dahil nagkaroon ng pagkakataon, tumakas ang misis, tumakbo si hostage-taker at kinuha ang bata," Gumarang said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He cited initial reports reaching him indicating the hostage-taker was "very depressed."

Gumarang said the police have no record of the hostage-taker using drugs.

But he said negotiations led by Mayor Pacita de Leon succeeded in convincing the man to release his hostage and go with the mayor.

"Mapayapa at tahimik siya sumama kay Mayor kanina (The hostage-taker went quietly with the mayor)," he said. — LBG, GMA News
