Armed with Internet skills and mobile tools, incoming college freshmen are the most empowered generation in history. But many are still frightened by the prospect of terror teachers, loneliness, and pimple outbreaks. Have no fear, Twitter is here, providing a global platform for advice on the near-universal experience of entering a brave new world.
Tweeps (people on Twitter) from the University of the Philippines created early buzz after its Student Council posted a video entitled “Noong Freshie Ako…” which showcased different stories meant to help freshies.
Hashtag #tipsforUPfreshies excited students and alumni as they shared thoughtful tips, some of which are clearly easier tweeted than done, such as momblogger's advice: “Do not let terror teachers terrify you. They can smell fear & make your life more miserable. Just STUDY." @FrancisAcero added, “Go for the terror profs. Don't worry about the grade. You'll learn, and that's what counts.”
“Maraming cute guys and girls sa libraries. ALAM NIYO YAN! been there, done that. Masaya rin matulog dun,” @richardbolisay reminded.
@fartypoo provided a practical advice: “Magpagawa na ng madaming 1x1 at 2x2 ID picture. Yung kamukha mo para di na mahirapan mag recall prof mo kung pumapasok ka.”
Meanwhile, @dee_nicolas shared a UP freshie must do: “Read the Collegian. Be part of great student organizations. ‘Fall’ in love with the Sunken Garden. Walk around. :).”
@givemesam added, “take the most random PE classes you can think of: Yoga, scrabble, motor sports and duckpin bowling.”
“Do not ask where 'TBA' is,” posted @JoanieOfArc, while @redenmat said, “Ihanda ang sarili sa pagbili ng marami-raming BLUE BOOK, best friend mo yan during exams.”
“Memorize UP Naming Mahal (for bonus points in quizzes and basketball games),” @visiblenoise27 shared.
Tweets from University of Santo Tomas’ alumni were likewise trending worldwide on Friday.
“Kasing importante ng id niyo ang payong kaya dalhin every day :),” @papapattt said, while @Jrsze noted: “Join an org, or be part of the student council.”
“Since bago sapatos niyo, don't forget to bring band-aids para sa paltos! :),” @MsKendraMaxine said.
“If you don't have any idea kung sino yung mga magiging prof nyo. Ask higher year levels,” @mrgcrucena added.
“Wag maangas sa seniors nyo. Be humble,” @TineeDixon said.
At Ateneo, these form the vibe for a more upscale student body:
“You will ‘fall in love’ with at least 2 of your blockmates. Then Ateneo will teach you, ‘falling in love’ is a myth,” @sdrez said, while @gabpangilinan added, “Hindi kailangan mag-Fashion Show everyday. You're gonna run out of clothes, eventually.”
“There's more to the Rizal Lib than restrooms with bidets and airconditioned sleeping areas. ;)),” @Rizal_Library said.
“Everyone gets a new slate. no one cares what you did in high school,” @jobdeleon added.
“Kids, your laptops will not get stolen, but someone will ALWAYS steal your umbrella,” @paulinethequeen said.
“Utang na loob, please don't wear heels during the OrSem. Wear the most comfortable shoes and clothes,” @bloowind added.
