It is easy to understand why Filipinos are fond of singing contests, whether they are local barangay competitions or shows like "American Idol," viewed all over the world.

In an episode of "Tonight with Arnold Clavio," director Joey Reyes and actress Isay Alvarez talked about Filipinos' love for singing.

"Filipinos sing at the slightest provocation," Direk Joey explained. "When in doubt, when in fear, when happy, when sad, we sing."

Family events in the Philippines - whether birthdays, weddings, or even funerals - are filled with music.

Alvarez said the Filipinos' love for music explains why Filipino-Mexican-American Jessica Sanchez is very popular in the country today.

Alvarez said it was quite rare for someone as young as Sanchez, 16, to be known all over the world for her talent.

The American Idol fever has long reached Philippine shores in past years, but Pinoys are following the show more than ever because of Sanchez, whose mother is from Bataan province.

The teenager from San Diego, California edged out 24 other contestants this season and is now contending for the top spot against Phillip Phillips from Leesburg, Georgia.

The winner will be announced at the Nokia Theater on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in the Philippines).

Reyes and Alvarez agreed that the interest in singing contests like "American Idol" is part of the Filipino culture. Alvarez said many Pinoys dream of appearing on stage just like Jessica.

Alvarez offered some advice to aspiring singers: "Don't stop learning," she said. "Even when you succeed, keep learning, keep taking voice lessons."

Direk Joey also advised singer wannabes to look for their own voice. "Don't follow a trend," he said.
