Tennis: PHL team mainstay Huey ends French Open run matching personal best
RP Davis Cup mainstay Treat Huey ended his French Open run matching his personal best, reaching the third round of the tournament with doubles partner Dominic Inglot of Great Britain. Huey and Inglot faced tenth seeds Aisam-Ul-Hag Qureshi of Pakistan and Jean-Julien Rojey of the Netherlands over the weekend, hoping to march on through the quarterfinals of the tournament. Qureshi and Rojer, however, proved why they finished third at the Australian Open earlier this year as they dominated Huey and Inglot in the first set, 6-1. In the second set, Huey and Inglot offered more resistance, fighting to reach 5-4 before their opponents forced the two to drive two shots to the net for the victory. “Had we gotten one of those break points, it’s all square in the second set. There’s always one point here and there, especially in doubles, but yeah, it just didn’t go our way and they came up pretty big," said Huey in an interview with the New York Times. "We’re disappointed going down, but ah, I mean, you can keep getting better, so I feel like if we keep working, we’ve got a bright future ahead of us.” With the win, Huey has now matched his personal best finish in grand slam tournaments, after having reached the third round at the 2011 US Open. The Filipino-American is expected to represent the Philippines yet again this September, as the country faces Indonesia in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group II finals. - Renee Fopalan / AMD, GMA News
