Two newly-released books in the United States sparked interest in Philippine boxing and culture, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said. In a news release on Monday, the DFA said the two new books released on June 1 were:
- “Diaspora Diplomacy: Philippine Migration and its Soft Power Influences,” and
- “From Pancho to Pacquiao: Philippine Boxing in and out of the Ring.”
The book launch at the Social Hall of the Philippine Center featured a reading and discussion with co-authors Dr. Joaquin Jay Gonzalez III and Prof. Angelo F. Merino, the DFA said. Gonzalez is a professor of politics and chair of the Asian Studies and Yuchengco Philippine Studies Programs. On the other hand, Merino is adjunct professor of Philippine and Asian Studies as well as Head Boxing Coach of the University of San Francisco.
Gemma Nemenzo, editor of the books and head of Literacy Initiatives International Foundation, said the books were different from each other but both shared the Filipino culture equally.
Gonzalez and Merino who were also certified US Amateur boxing trainers read interesting excerpts from the books and cited enlightening trivia.
One trivia they cited was that Ceferino "Bolo" Garcia had the record number of wins and knockouts by any Filipino boxer, yet he is not in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Another surprising fact was that there are over 100 Filipino world boxing titlists.
World Boxing Council (WBC) Latino Champion Glenn Donaire also joined during the question and answer portion and explained the difference between Filipino and American boxing styles.
The book launching was participated in by different sectors from the Filipino-American community and others guests including Consul General Marciano Paynor, Jr. and California Senator Leland Lee.
During the discussion, Paynor underlined the importance of unison and leadership among the Fil-Am community.
Lee, who authored a California State Resolution marking October as Fil-Am history month acknowledged the contributions of Fil-Ams to the American society. - with Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
