NDRRMC: 1 killed in Davao City landslide; SLPA death toll rises to 8
At least one person was killed in a landslide that hit a village in Davao City due to rain brought by a shallow low-pressure area (SLPA) last weekend, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Thursday.
The NDRRMC cited belated reports indicating the incident took place at 2:50 a.m. last Monday in Sitio Ladian in Marilog village in Davao City.
It said this brought to eight the number of people killed in the wake of the SLPA that had affected parts of Mindanao and Luzon.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the SLPA had dissolved as of Thursday morning.
"Several families and structures were affected with one reported dead," it said of the landslide in Davao City.
The fatality was initially identified as Sweet Jhara Onad, 10, who was buried in the landslide.
A tribal office was damaged in Sitio Ladian in Marilog district in Davao City, it added.
The NDRRMC also said five fishermen survived a big wave that hit their boat and caused it to capsize at 2 p.m. last Tuesday.
The fishermen were from Aplaya village in Digos City, who were headed for Governor Generoso (Sigaboy) at the time.
One was initially reported missing but was found to have returned home safely Wednesday.
63 missing
Of the eight fatalities, five were passengers of the passenger-cargo vessel MV Josille II that sank off Palawan after encountering big waves before midnight Tuesday.
They were identified as Jeccamae Estarija, Pamela Anne Clariza, Nita Huyo-A, Severino Eliseo, and John Aldrin Atienza. Eliseo and Atienza were part of the ship's crew.
At least two were reported injured while 63 are reported missing, including five in El Nido in Palawan and 58 in Sarangani.
The missing included Juanito Tito, Jolito Buenafe, Mark Angelo Esmeria, Nora Cortez and one Antonia, passengers of the MV Josille II.
The NDRRMC said the floods and landslides brought by the SLPA affected 3,462 families or 17,279 people in 15 villages in two towns and two cities in Regions 10 and 12.
Of these, 257 families or 1,254 people are in four evacuation centers.
At least 165 houses were destroyed while 118 were damaged.
Damage to agriculture was estimated at P1,044,333 in Glan town in Sarangani alone. — LBG, GMA News
