Magnitude-6 quake jolts NCR, parts of Luzon

June 17, 2012 7:32am
An early morning quake measuring at least magnitude 6.0 jolted several residents in Metro Manila and several parts of Luzon early Sunday morning.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said that while there is little chance of the quake causing damage, aftershocks may be expected.

"Posibleng magkaroon ng aftershock. Ang iba sa mga ito mararamdaman, marami doon hindi mararamdaman," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum Jr. said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Solidum also said there is no chance of the quake triggering a tsunami.

He said they expect the quake to be felt in Metro Manila, Zambales, Pangasinan and other parts of Central Luzon.

When asked if there is cause for worry, he said, "wala naman (there is none)."

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, for its part, said it has not received initial reports of damage to property.

"Sa monitoring namin so far wala namang pinsala (Our monitoring shows no damage reported so far)," NDRRMC head Benito Ramos said in a separate dzBB interview.

An initial Phivolcs report said the quake was recorded at 6:18 a.m., with the epicenter at 52 km west of Candelaria town in Zambales province.

It was tectonic in origin and was felt at Intensity IV in Makati City and Intensity III in Quezon City.

On the other hand, the United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.1.

USGS said the quake was recorded at 6:18 a.m., with the epicenter near Dagupan City in Pangasinan. It estimated the epicenter at:

- 94 km southwest of Dagupan
- 111 km northwest of Olongapo
- 111 km west-northwest from Angeles City
- 143 km southwest of Baguio City
- 181 km northwest of Manila

Felt in parts of Luzon

A separate report on dzRH radio said the quake was felt as far as Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Pampanga.

In Metro Manila, the quake was felt in Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong and San Juan Cities, it added.

The dzRH report said the text messages indicated the quake at about 6:20 a.m.

A Phivolcs official said their initial findings indicated the epicenter at 52 km west of Candelaria, Zambales and was tectonic in origin.

"Malamang Zambales Fault [ang pinagmulan] ito ang tinitingnan natin," the report quoted a Phivolcs official as saying, adding that a quake of this magnitude may bring aftershocks, but not tsunami. — LBG, GMA News
