Alaska Aces interim head coach Luigi Trillo lashed out Monday night on Twitter, calling the Smart Gilas Philippine national men's basketball team program "selfish," but the head coach of that team, Chot Reyes, fired back, saying such comments come from "misinformed parties." Trillo tweeted out, "I find what Gilas is doing is very selfish. They get the PBA pros 1st then they have a cadet pool baring those picked from joining the PBA draft."

That tweet immediately drew multiple retweets and replies, with Trillo fielding some of the comments from his followers. He also added, "[Smart Gilas manager] Butch Antonio mentioned those chosen cadets will get ripe when they decide to enter the PBA. Then why send them if they are still not ripe?" A few hours later though, Reyes tweeted out a clarification, saying that the team being sent to the July 3-7 SEABA tournament was a different line-up from the Gilas cadet pool. He also said that the SEABA players would still be PBA draft-eligible. Reyes then added, "Comments about GILAS being selfish and unfair are coming from misinformed parties basing their remarks on inaccurate press reports." Earlier this year, the Smart Gilas program announced that they would change their approach to forming the national team, assembling instead a list of PBA talents to form the core of the team that would endeavor to qualify for, and if successful, play in the 2016 Olympics. Smart Gilas would also assemble a cadet team comprised of collegiate and semi-professional players with the goal of integrating the standouts into the national team proper down the road. The Alaska Aces currently have two of their best players, point guard LA Tenorio and big man Sonny Thoss, as part of the Gilas pool of PBA pros. The club though is a PBA-worst 1-6 in the on-going Governors' Cup, with no shot at making the semifinals. - AMD, GMA News
