Meralco scraps morning brownout due to low power demand

June 22, 2012 2:05pm
Citing lower power demand, power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said it has scrapped a plan to implement pre-noon brownouts in some of its service areas.

But Meralco indicated it is still monitoring the situation to see if there is a need to push through with the afternoon brownout.

"As a result of actual lower demand, the manual load dropping tentatively scheduled from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. did not push through. We will provide you with further updates this afternoon," it said.

Earlier Friday, Meralco's Dina Lomotan said Meralco may have to implement rotating brownouts in Metro Manila and nearby provinces due to "limited" power supply.

She had said the outages for the day were planned from 10 to 11 a.m., and from 1 to 2 p.m.

The announcement came a day after the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines went on yellow alert due to low power reserves for Luzon.

But the NGCP allayed fears of a major power outage in Luzon. –KG, GMA News
