'Ferdinand Marcos' nominated to CJ post before JBC

June 22, 2012 5:53pm

A namesake of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was the latest nominee to the chief justice position before the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).

Ferdinand Jose David Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Pijao Sr. was endorsed by a certain Maria Dulce Marcos Pijao. The endorsement was made Tuesday but the JBC received it only on Thursday.

The recommendation came with a letter of acceptance by Mr. Pijao.

Pijao previously ran as an independent in the 2010 presidential elections but his certificate of candidacy was denied by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

He is so far the 13th individual to have accepted the nomination. The others include Associate Justices Arturo Brion and Roberto Abad, Comelec commissioner Rene Sarmiento, former Executive Secretary Ronaldo Zamora, former University of the Philippines Law dean Raul Pangalangan, and former Ateneo Law dean Cesar Villanueva.

Fifty-four people have either applied, been recommended, or been automatically nominated to the post vacated by ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona.

Those who applied were teacher-nurse Jocelyn Esquivel and dismissed Manila Judge Floro Florentino. All 14 SC justices were recommended, but Associate Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Mariano Del Castillo declined.

The JBC extended the deadline for nominations by 10 days to July 2. —Mark MerueƱas/AE/VS, GMA News
