Llamas: PNoy will 'graciously welcome' Pimentel to LP
President Benigno Aquino III will “graciously welcome” Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III to the ruling Liberal Party (LP), a Malacañang official said Friday.
In a text message to reporters, presidential adviser on political affairs Ronald Llamas said the administration will always be open for Pimentel.
"I think the President will graciously welcome Senator Koko if he should decide to join the administration ticket for 2013," he said.
Also he said Pimentel and the President “clearly share the same advocacy and principles especially against electoral fraud, impunity and the promotion of a more credible and transparent electoral system.”
“I'm sure the President understands the sentiments of Senator Koko regarding the inclusion of several questionable personalities in the UNA (United Nationalist Alliance) slate which go against his principles and values,” Llamas said.
UNA is a coalition formed by Vice President Jejomar Binay's Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban (PDP-Laban) and former President Joseph Estrada's Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP).
In a separate text message, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said the LP is open to Pimentel “if he is interested.”
“We just gave him time to sort out his situation with UNA. Now that he has made up his mind, there is room for talks and that will happen soon,” said Abad.
Abad served as LP campaign manager during the 2010 presidential elections and a former president of the party.
LP is now chaired by President Aquino.
Pimentel on Thursday said he left UNA because he cannot run with former Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri whom he said took his four years in the Senate.
However, the senator said he has not left PDP-Laban, of which he is president.
Zubiri, who was proclaimed by the Commission on Elections as the 12th winning senator four years ago, resigned from the Senate last August 3 amid mounting testimonies about fraud committed during the 2007 polls.
He was replaced by Pimentel, who had filed an electoral protest against him and poll sabotage cases against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and former Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos. — LBG, GMA News
