Road accidents across the country from January to June have claimed the lives of at least 593 people and injured over 2,300 others, a police official said Thursday.

Citing police reports for the first half of the year, Police Highway Patrol Group (HPG) spokesman Supt. Edwin Butacan also said the three major causes of road accidents are human factor, mechanical defects, and road conditions.

Metro Manila has the highest record of road accidents, Butacan said, adding that of the total 5,021 reported incidents in the past six months 1,005 occurred in February, the highest monthly record.

Records show that January had 826 incidents with 101 dead; February 1,005 with 96 dead; March, 813 with 103 dead; April 795 with 104 dead; May 852 with 92 dead; and June 730 with 97 dead. — LBG, GMA News
