PAGASA: Floods, landslides threaten Bicol, Samar, Leyte, Surigao
Despite the esit of a weather disturbance (a low-pressure area) and the weakening of the southwest monsoon, flash floods and landslides still threaten at least four areas, state weather forecasters said Friday.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said this is due to a wind convergence, a condition where winds from different directions meet.
"The wind convergence will bring scattered to widespread rain over Bicol region, Samar provinces, Leyte provinces and Surigao del Norte," it said in its 11:30 a.m. advisory.
"Residents living in low-lying areas and along mountain slopes are advised to be on alert for possible occurrence of flash floods and landslides," it added.
Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Buddy Javier said there is no potential cyclone expected near Philippine territory during the weekend.
Javier said the western part of the country can expect rain from a "weak" southwest monsoon.
He added rain will be isolated mostly in the western part of the country, including Metro Manila.
Last Tuesday, Metro Manila and several parts of Luzon experienced heavy rain and floods brought by a low-pressure area crossing Luzon.
