Floods swamp parts of NCR, Rizal; MMDA not lifting number coding
Floods swamped several parts of Metro Manila and Rizal province early Friday in the wake of intermittent heavy rain since Thursday night.
But the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) maintained the number coding for the day remains will not be lifted.
"ADVISORY: Number coding is not suspended today, July 20, 2012," it said on its Twitter account, in response to queries from netizens.
Under the number coding scheme, vehicles with plate numbers ending in 9 and 0 are barred from major thoroughfares from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
In eastern Metro Manila, many students and commuters were stranded as floods in some areas rose to above-knee levels, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.
The report said the area at Ortigas Avenue Extension caused even a six-wheeler truck to stall. The floods stranded students heading for Pasig City.
As of 8:37 a.m., the MMDA said Ortigas Avenue Extension in front of Don Mariano Subdivision was not passable to light vehicles.
It also said floods were gutter-deep at Roxas Boulevard near Baclaran as of 8:09 a.m.
Floods were knee-deep as of 7:03 a.m. along Imelda Avenue at SM Sucat in Parañaque City and not passable to light vehicles.
In Parañaque City, Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. said floods at the Evacom area were knee-high as of 5:30 a.m.
"Baka ang tubig na naipon mapunta sa SM Sucat kaya suspend namin ang morning session (The flood may reach SM Sucat so we suspended classes)," he said.
Floods swamp Rizal province roads
Meanwhile, in Rizal province, Antipolo rescue unit head Joey Marco said some areas were flooded, including Mayamot village.
He said the V.V. Soliven area had reached knee-high levels.
In Cainta town, Mayor Dominic Ilagan said some areas were flooded.
In Morong town, disaster management officer Jerome Mateo said the floods affected the national road.
He said they evacuated 14 families near the riverbanks. — LBG,
