DOE expects LPG supply to stabilize this weekend

July 27, 2012 8:50am
Energy officials expect the supply of liquefied petroleum gas to stabilize this weekend, with the expected arrival of a shipment of LPG on Friday.

Department of Energy (DOE)-Oil Industry Management Bureau head Zenaida Monsada also said they are setting up a hotline to go after suspected hoarders of the commodity.

"Meron kaming weekly monitoring ng inventory. Sa aming pagmo-monitor... may isang sumablay dahil sa bagyo, ang tinamaan Liquigaz. Dito kumukuha ang karamihan," Monsada said in an interview on dzBB radio.

She said Liquigaz is a major importer of LPG, and supplies major refillers with the commodity.

The failure of its shipment to arrive last week caused worries especially among independent refillers about a possible lack of supply of LPG.

But she said the shipment was due to arrive Friday, adding LPG Marketers Association (LPGMA) party list Rep. Arnel Ty expects the supply to stabilize by this coming Monday.

On the other hand, she said the DOE, upon the suggestion of Rep. Ty, may call for an industry meeting to prevent a repeat of such an incident.

Monsada also said the DOE is setting up a hotline after learning of complaints of an alleged shortage of LPG in some areas.

"Suggestion namin kung may magreklamo sa opisina ibigay ang complete address ng kanilang nirereklamo para masita namin," she said.

But she also said the DOE is coordinating with Liquigaz to see which firm bought LPG from it.

For now, she said complainants can call the DOE at 840-2114.

"Pag ang brand na ito nawala sa merkado ibig sabihin nagtatago sila 'di ba (If certain brands that bought a big amount of LPG from Liquigaz have no supply, would that not suggest hoarding)?" she said.

Meanwhile, Monsada declined to confirm the LPGMA's claim that LPG prices may rise by P7 per kilo or P77 per 11-kg tank by August 1.

The LPGMA had announced a plan to raise prices by P7 per kilo starting Aug. 1.

"Kami binabase namin sa contract price na malalaman namin pagkatapos ng buwan. Sa August 1 namin malalaman kung tataas at kung magkano, pero may indication na pataas," Monsada said. — LBG, GMA News
