NBA: Magic to announce Jacque Vaughn as new head coach

July 29, 2012 8:42am
The Orlando Magic will hold a press conference on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time) to announce that the franchise has hired San Antonio Spurs assistant Jacque Vaughn to fill their vacant head coach position, Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports.

The 37-year-old Vaughn is set to handle a team that is in transition, with superstar center Dwight Howard already halfway out the door. When the team does bite the bullet and deal Howard, Vaughn will be in charge of what is likely going to be a young team filled with up-and-coming players.

Vaughn, who played as a point guard from 1997 to 2009 with six different NBA teams, had been tapped by San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich for an assistant position after finishing his career with the Spurs.

Last week, Orlando had narrowed down their choices to him, Philadelphia 76ers assistant Michael Curry, and Phoenix Suns development coach Lindsey Hunter. The common thread linking the three is that they are all former NBA players.

One person who is probably unhappy about the hiring is former Orlando Magic center and current NBA on TNT analyst Shaquille O'Neal, who reacted to rumors of Vaughn as a front-runner for the position by tweeting out, "are u kidding me, wow, good luck winning with Dat team Dwite howard."

The Magic had fired their previous head coach, Stan Van Gundy, last May, after the Howard-less Magic were eliminated in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs by the Indiana Pacers.  - AMD, GMA News
