Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.0 quake hits Davao Oriental, aftershocks expected

A magnitude-5.0 quake jolted the Davao Oriental area in Mindanao before noon Sunday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded near Cateel town at 11:04 a.m., and was tectonic in origin.

It said the epicenter was traced to 27 km northeast in Cateel in Davao Oriental.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at:

- Intensity IV in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur

- Intensity III in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur

While Phivolcs said no damage was expected, it added aftershocks are possible.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the quake at magnitude 4.9, and traced the epicenter to:

- 22 km east-southeast of Santa Maria

- 40 km north-northeast of Baganga

- 47 km southeast of Bislig

- 59 km southeast of Hinatuan

Second quake in Davao area

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said a second quake measuring magnitude 4.2 rocked Mindanao before noon.

It said the quake occurred at 11:27 a.m., with the epicenter at 17 km southeast of Don Marcelino in Davao Del Sur.

The quake was felt at Intensity I in General Santos City.

No damage or aftershock was expected, Phivolcs said.

USGS measured the quake at magnitude 4.5, with the epicenter at:

- 5 km north-northeast of Lapuan

- 27 km south-southeast of Malita

- 31 km north-northeast of Caburan

- 47 km east-northeast of Alabel
