Palace aide: Economic managers to make Chacha findings public

August 4, 2012 12:55pm
Malacañang on Saturday assured the public the economic managers tasked by President Benigno Aquino III to study the implications of amending the 1987 Constitution will make their findings public.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Aquino already instructed his economic managers to do a study on the matter, after meeting with top leaders of Congress.

“He (Aquino) has asked his economic managers to do a study on the basis of the proposal. And perhaps we can expect something will be shared with the public when the economic managers finish their study,” Valte said on government-run dzRB radio.

Earlier, Aquino gave his economic managers two weeks to review the implications of Charter change (Chacha).

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima said the economic team may consult with multilateral agencies like the World Bank on what the laws are in other countries.

Purisima also said they have to consult with the private sector as well.

Aquino himself had said he was not keen on amending the 1987 Constitution, which was drafted and ratified during the term of his late mother Corazon.

But he ordered the review after meeting last Monday with Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr.

Enrile and Belmonte pushed to amend the economic provisions of the Constitution, particularly the 40-percent limit on foreign ownership of corporations in the Philippines.

They also stressed any amendments to the Charter would be limited to economic provisions. — LBG, GMA News
