Men with weird hairstyles face arrest in Saudi Arabia

August 6, 2012 2:00pm
Saudi Arabia’s religious police said men could be arrested if they are caught in public sporting a "weird" hair style that goes against Islamic tenets.

According to a report of the news site Emirates 24/7, the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice said it plans to go around schools next school year to to warn teenage boys against styling their hair in a way that violates tradition in the conservative Gulf Kingdom.

Quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily Okaz, Abdul Latif Al Sheikh, chairman of the commission, noted that hair was a personal thing "in which we should not intervene directly.”

Newspapers earlier reported about a "widespread phenomenon" involving teenage Saudis with weird clothes and bizarre hairstyles.

Abdul said if "the young man wears strange clothes and his hair style violates Islamic tradition and tenets, then he will be stopped."

He said if the boy's aims is to "harass women and hurt the society," he will be stopped. - VVP, GMA News
