Maynilad apologizes, admits its water is turbid because of the monsoon floods

August 10, 2012 4:53am

With the weather finally starting to improve, concessionaire Maynilad Water asked for understanding as it maintained it is working to normalize water supply for areas in Manila's west zone.

Maynilad spokesperson Grace Laxa assured customers the company is doing everything to normalize operations soonest.

"Humihingi kami ng paumanhin. Hanggang hindi bababa ang turbidity level, hindi natin mababalik sa normal ang water supply. Ginagawa natin ang lahat para maibsan ang epekto nito (We ask for understanding. Until the turbidity level goes down, we cannot normalize water supply. We are doing everything to minimize the impact on customers)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio Thursday afternoon.

She cited reports reaching her that water pressure had been low in some areas, and almost cut off in areas on higher ground.

In a series of posts on its Twitter account, Maynilad said it had to reduce its production of water due to problems with water quality because of the heavy rain.

"We are now starting to gradually increase our production normalization. It still depends on quality of water coming into treatment plants," it said.

Maynilad said it had problems with the quality of water from the dam as heavy rains caused high turbidity (haziness) in its raw water.

"Reduced water production is on account of the very poor quality of raw water that we are getting fr the Ipo Dam," it said.

"We want to ensure good quality of water produced compliant to drinking water standard," it added.

It said customers with questions can call its hotline at 1626.

On the other hand, the Navotas City government said residents in Metro Manila may "experience water shortage" at least Friday, "as pipes are being repaired."

"Please store enough water," Navotas advised.

Maynilad operates and maintains the water and sewerage system of Manila's West Zone. These areas include:

  • Caloocan, Las Piñas, Malabon, Manila, Muntinlupa, Navotas, Pasay, Parañaque, Valenzuela, parts of Quezon City, a part of Makati City
  • Cavite and Bacoor Cities, and Rosario, Imus, Noveleta, and Kawit towns in Cavite.

The West Zone covers 540.43 square kilometers, Maynilad said. — ELR/KG, GMA News
