PAGASA: 2 to 3 cyclones due this month; don't let guard down

August 11, 2012 11:20am
While this weekend may be sunny, state weather forecasters on Saturday advised the public not to let their guard down as two to three more cyclones may enhance the monsoon and bring heavy rain and floods this month.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said there is a chance the cyclones may have a similar effect on the monsoon as cyclone "Gener" (Saola) and "Haikui."

"Inaasahan natin 2-3 bagyo sa buwang ito. Huwag ibaba ang guard, ang naranasan natin noong ilang araw mararanasan sa susunod na araw pa," PAGASA forecaster Jori Loiz said on government-run dzRB radio.

Several areas in Luzon and Western Visayas are still reeling from the heavy rain and floods that forced the suspension of work and classes.

Tropical cyclone Gener first enhanced the monsoon and brought rain to parts of the country.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 53 were killed in Gner's wake.

"Marami pa tayong inaasahang bagyo na pwedeng magpalakas sa habagat (We expect more cyclones to enter Philippine territory and possibly enhance the monsoon)," Loiz said.

Meanwhile, Malacañang launched a Twitter-based reporting system for road rehabilitation efforts following this week's rain.

The Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) andthe Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) are engaging the public via social networking sites to report the damage.

"We enjoin the public to submit, via Twitter, information regarding national roads damaged by the Southwest Monsoon. Citizens must tag the official Twitter account of the PCDSPO [@PCDSPO], and use the unified hashtag, #lubak2normal," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said.

He said information submitted will be entered into a database handled by the DPWH, for immediate action. — LBG, GMA News
