UFC: ‘Smooth’ Henderson retains lightweight title over Edgar at UFC 150

August 12, 2012 3:30pm
In the rematch of their UFC 144 classic, Benson ‘Smooth’ Henderson defeated Frankie Edgar in another painfully close decision.

The defending champion zoned in on the left calf of Edgar, connecting with three beautifully timed leg kicks that did a lot of damage. Early in the fight, Edgar’s left calf was already visibly beaten up as a result of Henderson’s leg kicks. Edgar scored a takedown later in the round, but Henderson turned it into a guillotine attempt as the round ended.

Edgar scored big in the second round as he connected with a big right hand that decked the defending champion. Edgar went in for the kill but Henderson was able to gather his wits before Edgar could land anything substantial.

The third to the fifth rounds were all close, with both fighters landing significant strikes. However, Edgar seemed to be gaining steam in the latter part of the fight, as he was connecting with more strikes compared to the younger champion.

In the end, Henderson won via split decision. One judge scored it for 49-46 for Edgar while the other two judges scored it 48-47 for the defending champion.

The crowd booed the result heavily as they thought that Edgar did enough to win.

In the co-main event, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone scored what was the most exciting sub-two-minute fight in the UFC this year over Melvin Guillard. It was actually Guillard who started the fight well when he landed a big left hook that visibly stunned Cerrone. Guillard then came on strong thinking he had his opponent in deep trouble, but he was met with a powerful kick to the head followed by a right straight that knocked him out cold.

The next installment of the world’s most famous mixed martial arts competition will feature an exciting light heavyweight battle between reigning champion Jon Jones against Dan Henderson for UFC 151 early next month. - AMD, GMA News
