Palace exec: Only August 21 and 27 are declared holidays for now

August 12, 2012 4:49pm
Only August 21 and August 27 have been declared public holidays for now, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte on Sunday said in response to queries. She said there is no official proclamation yet as to the celebration of the end of Ramadan, also called the Eid’l Fitr.

August 21 marks the death anniversary of the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. while August 27 is National Heroes’ Day, which is usually celebrated every last Monday of August.

The end of Ramadan is also traditionally declared a holiday to give Muslim Filipinos a chance to observe their faith. According to the Islamic calendar, it falls on August 20 this year.

Muslims fast for a month each year and celebrate its conclusion through the Eid’l Fitr.

According to Proclamation No. 295 which listed the holidays for 2012, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) needs to inform the Office of the President on which day Muslim holidays such as the Eid’l Fitr will fall, as the date varies from year to year. — with Ailleen Estoquia /LBG, GMA News
