Heavy rains, floods mean working weekend for gov't crews

August 12, 2012 7:00pm
Several days of heavy rain and floods brought by an enhanced monsoon on Metro Manila and parts of Luzon have forced many government employees to work over the weekend.

On Sunday, many crews from the Department of Public Works and Highways were busy along major roads in Metro Manila, fixing the potholes and other damage caused by the rain and floods.

The DPWH crews slowed down traffic in some parts of Metro Manila as they hurried to repair the roads in time for Monday, when work and classes resume.

The repair work in various parts of the metropolis included asphalt-laying and -patching.

President Benigno Aquino III himself had a busy weekend, visiting evacuation centers in Rizal and Laguna to get a firsthand look at the conditions of residents affected by the floods.

He promised the residents that the government is working on long-term solutions to the floods.

Last week's heavy rain and floods swamped many parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 85 people were killed in the wake of the floods.

Even as the floodwaters subside, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration warned of a new potential cyclone that may bring rain anew to Metro Manila starting Wednesday. - BM, GMA News
