Lightning strike forces LRT-2 to cut operations

August 13, 2012 11:37am
(Updated 3:36 p.m.) - A lightning strike forced the Light Rail Transit Line 2 to cut short its operations to between C.M. Recto Avenue and Cubao in Quezon City before noon Monday.

LRT Administration spokesman Hernando Cabrera said this was due to the cantenary line at the Santolan area being hit by lightning.

"Hindi kinaya ng ating lightning arrester kaya napatid ang kuryente kaya dapat itigil ang operation between Cubao and Santolan," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.

The LRT-2 connects C.M. Recto Avenue in Manila and the Santolan area.

Cabrera could not immediately give a timetable on when repairs could be effected to the damaged facilities.

"Kumikidlat pa sa area," he said.

Cabrera later announced that LRT-2's operations have been restored up to the Anonas station.

"LRT2 operation restored up to Anonas. Trains now running Anonas to Recto and back. Katipunan and Santolan Stations still closed," Cabrera posted on Twitter.

By 3:26 p.m., LRT-2 operation has been fully restored. "LRT2 full line operation restored. Trains now running Santolan to Recto and back," Cabrera tweeted.
