The University of the East Red Warriors continue to search for their first win of the season, while the Adamson University Soaring Falcons hope to build off a gutsy performance without marquee player Alex Nuyles, when these two teams meet on Wednesday, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, in the 75th season of the UAAP.
UE (0-5), was throttled anew, this time by a Jeric Teng-less UST Growling Tigers team which beat them 85-69. The Tigers used a 26-12 second quarter to establish a 41-23 advantage at the break, and from then on, simply coasted through the second half, as the Red Warriors were able to erase just a single point from their deficit.
Through five games, UE has failed to stop anybody, giving up 80.4 points a game, nearly eight points more than the next team. Opponents have shot 42.7 percent against their defense, and they rack up an average of 50 rebounds and 20.8 assists versus the Red Warriors, with all of those figures being worst in the league.
One positive for them though is a 34.8 percent (8/23) shooting clip from downtown versus UST, with JR Sumido hitting 5-of-11 triples. If he can replicate that feat, coupled with strong play from Roi Sumang and Chris Javier, they may be able to finally get a "W."
Their opponents, Adamson University (1-4), lost a squeaker in their last game, falling 56-52 to La Salle, and failing to defend a three-point lead, 52-49, with 2:42 left to play. Green Archers Jeron Teng and Yutien Andrada wound up scoring the last seven points, to put away a feisty Falcons squad that stuck close the entire 40 minutes.
It was Adamson's first game without Alex Nuyles, whom they lost for the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury, In his stead, the team actually drew strong performances from Ryan Monteclaro (12 points, a career-high) and Jansen Rios (7 points, all in the game's first four minutes, also a career-best). What held them back ironically, were their veterans, as Rodney Brondial, Roider Cabrera, and Eric Camson combined to go 6-of-30 from the field, including a 0-for-12 clip from downtown.
The thing to watch is which team's offense finds its groove. Adamson norms just a fraction more points than UE, 60.4 versus 60.0. The Falcons have more weapons than UE though, making it a question of whether or not they misfire. - AMD, GMA News
