Rodel Mayol (31-5-2, 22 KOs) was scheduled to battle Jose Alfredo Tirado (27-11-0, 19 KOs) this September 22 for the interim WBO Oriental flyweight title. However, barely three weeks before the said fight, Mayol decided to pull out, as he was offered a world title fight. Mayol, who’s coming off one of the biggest victories of his career last May against Julio Cesar Miranda, will now be fighting IBF super flyweight champion Juan Carlos Sanchez, Jr., in Mexico. Sanchez had won this title with a unanimous victory over Rodrigo Guerrero back in February, and he successfully defended the title last May with another decision victory over Juan Alberto Rosas. In Mayol’s stead, Froilan Saludar (15-0-1, 11 KOs) will now be facing Tirado in the main event of the fight card. Saludar was supposed to fight another Mexican in Miguel Tamayo (12-3-2, 11 KOs), but will now step in as the main event. This is a big opportunity for the former amateur boxing prospect. Saludar is regarded as one of the best up-and-coming fighters in the country, and being the main event of a card will do well for his confidence. A big win over a grizzled Mexican veteran will also surely give him a much-needed boost in the rankings. Mayol’s decision to pull out a few weeks before the fight gives a young fighter an opportunity to strut his stuff on a big stage. Young super flyweight Jerwin Ancajas (14-1-1, 6 KOs) will step in to fight Tamayo. Ancajas fought only a few weeks ago in the undercard of the bout between Vincent Palicte and Fredirex Rodriguez in Mandaluyong. - AMD, GMA News
