PHL dragonboat team hauls in three medals in day 2 of World Championships

(Updated 11:29 p.m.) The Philippine dragonboat team continues to shine at the 2012 World Dragonboat Championships, winning gold medals at the Senior Men's 500m 10-man event and the Senior Mixed 500m 10-man event, and a silver medal at the Senior Mixed 500m 20-man event Friday in Milan, Italy. 
 
In the Senior Men's 500m 10-man semifinals, the Philippines clocked in with the best time at 2:16,281. Germany came in second at 2:17,231 while the Czech Republic finished at 2:18,710.

The Philippines continued with its strong performance in the medal round, clocking in at 2:12,922, a clear second ahead of second-placer Russia who finished at 2:13,935. Poland was left to claim the bronze with a time of 2:16,677.
 
The Senior Mixed 500m 20-man semifinals also had the Philippines cruising to another first place finish as the only team to clock in under two minutes at 1:58,904. Hungary came in second at 2:00,631 while Germany followed close at 2:00,796.

But in the final round, the Russians were able to exact revenge, claiming the gold with 1:54,631 while the Philippines settled for silver after finishing with a time of 1:55,676. The Czech Republic got the bronze with   1:56,926.

Before the day ended, the Philippines got to squeeze out another gold after finishing the Senior Mixed 500m 10-man event at 2:15,714. It was another close battle between the Filipinos and the Russians, with the latter barely behind at 2:15,938. Coming in for bronze was Poland with a time of 2:17,325.

On Saturday, the Philippines will continue its quest for more hardware as it competes in various events in the 2000-meter and 200-meter distances. — ELR, GMA News
