At least two to three cyclones may pass through the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in September, state weather forecasters said Tuesday and urged for public preparedness.

"Ngayon ang peak ng typhoon season, kaya ating paghahandaan yan (This is the peak of the typhoon season. We have to prepare for this)," PAGASA forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Don't panic, but be prepared
"This is not a forecast. It just means that, based on historical data, this is the average number of cyclones that have entered the PAR for the month," explained GMA's resident meteorologist, Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz.

"We shouldn't panic, but we should also be aware and prepared (of this possibility)," he added.

In a separate interview on dzBB radio, PAGASA meterorogist Elvie Enriquez said that, so far this year, the cyclones that have entered into the PAR have either veered off course or have not been that intense.

"Ang karaniwan na bagyo, mas compact at buo, mas 'solido' at dadaan dito (Usually, cyclones can be expected to be more compact and 'solid', and may be expected to pass here )," she said.

PAGASA's remaining names for cyclones for 2012 include:
  • Karen
  • Lawin
  • Marce
  • Nina
  • Ofel
  • Pablo
  • Quinta
  • Rolly
  • Siony
  • Tonyo
