New NCRPO chief appeals to public: Report kotong cops to me
After his own son's run-in with the so-called "kotong cops," the new head of the Metro Manila police on Friday vowed to go after abusive policemen, but asked the public to report them to him.
New National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) head Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina said he will not allow "a few" rotten eggs to ruin the reputation of the Philippine National Police, most of whose members he said are level-headed and do their jobs well.
"Hindi namin papayagan na makasama sa hanay namin ang nakasisira sa napakaraming gumagawa ng kabutihan. Tuluy-tuloy ang pagbigay-tiwala sa amin ng tao," he said in an interview on dzBB radio.
But he said the public also has to cooperate by reporting run-ins with the rotten police personnel.
Espina's own son had such a run-in earlier this week, where two Quezon City policemen allegedly tried to extort money from him after accusing him of having "phone sex."
The Quezon City police has started administrative and criminal proceedings against the two, even if Espina said his son is still traumatized and could not immediately lodge a complaint against the two.
"It has to take my son to wake us up, to realize that in order to be effective sa cleansing, kung sino nakasisira sa aming hanay, (we need) the cooperation of everybody," the elder Espina said.
He said those who will file complaints or give information will be protected.
"Sa akin ninyo ideretso (Just give me the information directly if you want)," he said.
While he did not give his contact numbers during the radio interview, the NCRPO website listed the director's office number as 838-0251. — LBG, GMA News
