Report: 1 suspect in Makati engineer's killing dies, another falls

September 9, 2012 8:27am
One suspect in the killing of Makati City Engineer Nelson Morales in Bicol Friday was killed while another was captured over the weekend, a radio report said Sunday.

Police said they have taken into custody Roderick Saysay Sarahan, even as another suspect, Christian Saysay, died from gunshot wounds sustained in Friday's incident.

Sarahan is a relative of Saysay, who died from gunshot wounds sustained during Friday's shooting outside a church in Malinao town in Albay province, Bombo Radyo reported.

Morales was coming out of a church where he served as a godfather at a wedding when gunmen opened fire on the guests.

Vice President and former Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay mourned the killing of Morales, who already served as city engineer during his term as mayor.

Binay noted Morales was chairman for Albay of the United Nationalist Alliance.

He said Morales approached him early this year and sought his advice on his plan to run for mayor of his hometown of Malinao, Albay.

The Bombo Radyo report quoted Albay deputy police director Superintendent Paulino Belga as saying Sarahan was arrested in a follow-up operation of the Provincial Public Safety Management Company.

It said Sarahan was accosted while driving a motorcycle without license plates. A further record check showed its license had expired.

Sarahan was brought from Libon to the Albay Police Provincial Office where at witnesses identified him as among the gunmen.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to look into the motive behind the incident. — LBG, GMA News
