Quezon City ‘jeepney marshals’ gun down suspected robber
Plainclothes police personnel disguised as "jeepney marshalls" gunned down a suspected robber in a surprise encounter in Fairview, Quezon City on Wednesday morning.
Quezon City police head Chief Superintendent Mario dela Vega said he deployed the “jeepney marshals,” after Philippine Military Academy (PMA) cadet was shot last month in a jeepney holdup.
“Yung jeepney marshals pinapasakay natin nang random sa jeep at na-timing-an ang holdap. (Dito) nagkaroon ng shootout,” Dela Vega said in an interview over radio dzBB.
A report of radio dzBB’s Divine Carecle said the suspect who was gunned down by the plainclothes policemen on Wednesday allegedly declared a holdup inside the passenger jeepney.
The initial investigation showed that the suspect drew a cal-.45 pistol and declared a holdup shortly after boarding the jeepney with plate number PXV-173.
The suspect, who was not immediately identified, sustained a gunshot wound in the head and two in the chest. He was wearing a blue shirt, shorts, and a bonnet.
Dela Vega also explained the marshals shot the suspect in the head as they could not afford to let the robber harm the other passengers.
“Kailangan talaga ma-neutralize agad,” Dela Vega said.
PMA cadet recovering
Meanwhile, Dela Vega said PMA Cadet First Class Alfonso Aviles, who was gunned down after trying to thwart a jeepney robbery last month, is already showing signs of recovery after falling into a coma.
“Since the incident sa PMA, I ordered all station commanders to intensify their efforts against criminality especially sa area na ito kung saan naholdap ang kadete," Dela Vega said.
Aviles, who was shot on Aug. 25, is undergoing therapy at the V. Luna Medical Center, radio dzBB reported on Wednesday.
The report said Aviles could follow instructions, including sticking out his tongue and moving his legs. It said he also underwent motor exercises for his arms and legs.
The doctors gave him a good chance of recovering from his injury although they still could not yet remove the bullet lodged in his shoulder, the report added. - VVP, GMA News
