Berjaya Auto to sell Mazda cars and parts in PHL

September 12, 2012 6:05pm
Replicating the success of its parent's automotive distribution business in Malaysia, Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc. will start a new distributorship for Mazda vehicles, parts and accessories starting Jan. 1, 2013, Mazda Motor Corp. said Wednesday.

Shareholders of Berjaya Auto Philippines Inc. are Bermaz Motor International Ltd. – an indirect unit of Berjaya Corp. Berhad – and Berjaya Philippines Inc.

Berjaya Corp. Berhad is a Malaysian conglomerate listed on Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad, and Berjaya Philippines Inc. is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange.

Yuji Nakamine, director and senior managing executive officer of Mazda Motor, said the Japanese carmaker "is very impressed with Berjaya's track record in building the Mazda business in Malaysia.

"With this new business opportunity, Berjaya again demonstrates its commitment to Mazda by investing in the Philippines," he said.

Mazda is popular for the recently-launched Mazda CX5 compact SUV with SkyActiv technology.

Francis Lee, executive director of Bermaz – representing Berjaya Group of Companies – said Berjaya "lifted the Mazda brand tremendously in Malaysia when we took over as distributor in 2008."

"The Mazda sales volume has increased from less than 1,000 units in 2009 to about 6,000 units last year," Lee said.

The goal is to replicate that success in the Philippines, Lee said.

The Berjaya Group has been doing business in the Philippines for 18 years and has 800 employees in its food and beverage, hotels, gaming and lottery management businesses. Automotive distribution is its latest business venture. — VS, GMA News
