While saddened over the incident, Malacañang said Saturday the killing of two soldiers by communist New People’s Army rebels in Mindanao Thursday will not deter the government’s efforts to talk peace with the Communist Party of the Philippines, NPA and National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).
Added deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, the killing are even more tragic as they took place in September, which the government considers Peace Month.
Furthermore, the Palace commiserates with the families of the two slain soldiers, who she said were on normal security patrol when they were ambushed.
On Thursday, NPA fighters killed 1Lt. Arvin Quedding, 28; and Pfc. Alfe Caballes, 30, who were sent to Barangay Dagohoy in Talaingod town in Davao del Norte following the reported presence of the NPA there.
Initial reports indicated the soldiers were attacked upon their arrival in the area around noon Thursday. — DVM, GMA News
