September 22, 2012 8:52am

Heavy rain and recent earthquakes caused landslides in San Joaquin town in Iloilo province Thursday night and Friday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Saturday.

In its 6 a.m. report, the NDRRMC said the landslide incidents occurred at 9:45 p.m. Thursday and 5:45 a.m. Friday.

"An initial investigation made by the Municipal Engineering Office (MEO) and (the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office) revealed that said incidents were due to occurrence of numerous heavy rainfalls and earthquake activities within the areas," it said.

However, the NDRRMC did not immediately say if there were people injured due to the landslides.

As of Saturday, it said the Department of Public Works and Highways was conducting clearing operations.

It also said officials of Lopez Vito, Qui-anan and Tiolas villages in San Joaquin in Iloilo directed commuters passing through the Iloilo-Antique road are to take alternate routes in Barangay Tiolas. — LBG, GMA News
