100 street dwellers 'rescued' in Pasay saturation drive
At least 100 people sleeping on the streets of Pasay were "rescued" in a saturation drive conducted by police and social welfare authorities of the city said before dawn Friday. The saturation drive is part of the city's anti-criminality campaign, according to a report by radio dzBB's Rodil Vega early Friday. Some of the "rescued" street-dwellers, who were brought to the Pasay City Complex for interview and assessment, were also checked for criminal records, the report said. The agencies that took part in the operation included the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Pasay City public order and safety office, and Pasay City police. Police added those without relatives in Metro Manila will be assisted in returning to their home provinces. The others will be brought to the Jose Fabella Rescue Center in Mandaluyong City. Authorities have intensified their anti-crime efforts in Metro Manila in anticipation of an increase in criminality as the Christmas season draws closer. — ELR, GMA News
