The Los Angels Lakers formally announced the signing of Mike D'Antoni to fill their vacant head coach position, releasing a statement on their website. According to Mike Bresnahan of the LA Times, D'Antoni's contract is "three years guaranteed at $12 million" with a team option for a fourth year.

The release also added that "Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash both expressed support for the idea of playing for D'Antoni." D'Antoni has a career winning percentage of 53.3 percent (388 wins, 339 loses) in the regular season as head coach, and a post-season record of 26-29. His Phoenix teams twice made it to the Western Conference Finals, followed by a Western Conference Semifinals exit, and a first round exit.
