The Philippines will be sharing maritime data with four other countries to keep tabs on overfishing, a Malaysian news site said.

A report of Malaysia's The Star on Monday said the countries will share data on maritime movement under the Coral Triangle Initiative-Coral Reefs Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF). After the 8th CTI-CFF Senior Officials Meeting and 4th Ministerial Meeting, Malaysian Science,Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili said the project aims to monitor "each ship passing through the area in real time using satellites." Ongkili noted that Indonesia is already undertaking the program in the Straits of Malacca.
Malaysia currently holds the CTI-CFF chairmanship from 2011 to 2013. The other member countries include the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and the Solomon Islands.
He said representatives from the six CTI-CFF member countries agreed on the need to share information to address issues like encroachment by foreign fishing vessels.

Ongkili added that the project "not only involves governments but also the private sector and the people on the ground." - VVP, GMA News
