Pacquiao advisor Koncz apologizes for assault on photographer
Pacquiao advisor Michael Koncz issued an apology from himself and assistant trainer Buboy Fernandez to Getty Images photographer Al Bello, after the former two had assaulted Bello, in the aftermath of Manny Pacquiao's sixth round KO, Saturday (Sunday, PHL time).
Koncz told Lem Satterfield of The Ring, "There was a misunderstanding, and if it was construed any other way, then he has my sincerest apology."
He also later added, "I think in the heat of concern for Manny's health and safety at that moment, there was a misunderstanding between the cameraman, myself and Buboy.
"So on behalf of Buboy and myself, we apologize for any inconvenience that it may have caused to the cameraman."
Bello had reportedly been taking pictures of a knocked-out Pacquiao, which enraged the boxer's two supporters. Photographs of the images then surfaced online, and was first reported on by Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole.
Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, promised to look into the incident, saying, ""What I find interesting is that neither of these gentlemen, nor anyone else on Team Pacquiao, had any problems when the photographers were doing their jobs and shooting pictures of Ricky Hatton after Manny knocked Hatton out."
The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines also demanded action, after issuing a statement, Thursday, condemning what had happened.
"It is clear that [Al] Bello was merely performing his obligations as a photojournalist and, besides, had every right to take pictures of the fallen Pacquiao," the Filipino union said in a statement.
The two aides "had absolutely no reason to attack and their doing so was actually in the nature of a criminal act," the union added.
Pacquiao "should take action against these two, whose boorish and unsportsmanlike reaction to the loss can only tarnish the reputation for sportsmanship that has endeared him to millions of fans." - With a report from AFP / Renee Fopalan / AMD, GMA News
