A United Arab Emirates (UAE) court has slapped a one-year jail term on an Emirati accused of threatening police and trying to rape a Filipino.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the man, 47, of threatening two policemen and claiming he would blow up a gas cylinder if they got near him.
Police at the time were summoned by a Filipino who claimed the 47-year-old Emirati tried to rape him, according to a report posted Sunday on Gulf News.
Court records showed a Filipino man called the police claiming the Emirati had forced him into his villa and planned to rape him.
But when police arrived, the Emirati allowed some gas to leak out from the cylinder, and threatened to use his lighter if the policemen came close to him.
Prosecutors said the Emirati stood in front of his house, with the gas cylinder in one hand and the lighter in the other.
One of the policemen testified that when they arrived at the Emirati's house, he threatened to blow up the gas cylinder.
“He repeatedly threatened us ... it was obvious that he was under the influence of some sort of drug. The Filipino man claimed that he managed to escape from the defendant’s place when the latter tried to rape him," he said.
The policemen finally managed to calm down the Emirati and restrained him.
"We put a distance between him and the gas cylinder… and he showed us medical reports confirming that he has Aids and hepatitis. We called the anti-narcotics police and the defendant went inside… then we took the Filipino to the police station to give his statement,” the policeman testified.
Prosecution records also indicated police learned the defendant had fallen unconscious in a restaurant later that afternoon.
