After what has been a roller-coaster ride for Denver Cuello in the past month, it appears that the one opportunity he’s been looking forward to might finally come through. According to Cuello’s trainer and manager Aljoe Jaro, the WBC is softening its stance and may be on the way to sanctioning a title shot for Cuello this March.

Cuello (32-4-6, 21 KOs) was given word by the WBC that if he agrees to step aside and allow Xiong Zhao Zhong (20-4-1, 11 KOs) to fight Mexico’s Javier Martinez Resendiz in China, Cuello will be the first to challenge the winner. However, things didn’t go according to plan. After Zhong won the WBC minimumweight title last November, Zhong’s team requested for a voluntary defense of the WBC minimumweight title this March which the WBC Board unanimously granted in controversial fashion.

However, according to Cuello’s trainer and manager Aljoe Jaro, the WBC is starting to soften their stance which may lead to a Cuello-Zhong fight this March.

“Mukhang lumalambot na ang WBC kasi maraming tumitira sa kanila ngayon dahil sa ginawa nila,” Jaro said.

According to Jaro, the WBC will suggest to Zhong’s team to defend the WBC title against Cuello this March.

“Nasa Bangkok si Liu Gang [Zhong’s promoter] at si Gary Shaw ngayon para pag-usapan yung laban ni Zhong sa Las Vegas ngayong March,” Jaro said. “Sinabihan ko sila na kung kailangan nila ako dun, kahit bukas lilipad ako.”

Cuello defeated Ganigan Lopez back in May in a fight that was deemed as the final eliminator for the WBC minimumweight title, but because of WBC’s plan to tap the Chinese market, they paid Cuello a step-aside fee to allow Zhong to capture the WBC title and become the first Chinese world champion. - AMD, GMA News
