This early, developers are beginning to see traces of what could be Apple's next-generation iPhone smartphone and iOS mobile operating system, a tech site reported.

A report on The Next Web quoted developers who noted references to a new iPhone identifier and iOS version 7.

"One developer showed us that Apple has been testing hardware relating to a new ‘iPhone6,1′ identifier, powered by a device running iOS 7, which is expected to be released by Apple in the middle part of this year," it said.

It added its initial analysis of developer logs it had seen indicated app requests originating from an IP address on Apple’s Cupertino campus.

This would suggest that "members of Apple’s software development and app teams are compatibility testing some of the more popular or well-known applications already on the App Store," The Next web said.

"Although OS and device data can be faked, the unique IP footprint leading back to Apple’s Cupertino campus leads us to believe this is not one of those attempts," it added.

Presently, Apple's flagship smartphone is the iPhone 5, whose identifiers are ‘iPhone5,1′ and ‘iPhone 5,2′.

Such identifiers denote the LTE model of the handset and the 4G bands on which it operates.

Citing its sources, The Next Web said Apple may have started working on iOS 7 towards the end of 2012 and may soon finalize the features included in its first public release.

On the other hand, it noted Apple enthusiast site 9to5mac.com had reported seeing references to Apple’s new iOS 6 software ahead of its launch at WWDC 2012. — TJD, GMA News
