Reboot film for “Hitman” game in the works

February 7, 2013 2:35am
Back in 2007, 20th Century Fox and EuropaCorp released a film adaptation of the popular IO Interactive video game “Hitman”. Starring actor Timothy Olyphant in the titular role as Agent 47, the movie grossed $100 million worldwide but was met with universally negative reviews.

It looked as though a sequel to the Xavier Gens directed film wasn’t going to happen anytime soon, but that changes with a new report from Deadline, which said a reboot flick was in the workds for the Square Enix video game property.

Announced by Fox International Productions, the new Hitman movie will be entitled “Agent 47”, and will have Fast and the Furious series star Paul Walker as its lead. Walker will begin production and shave his head for the role after completing his global press tour for Fast and the Furious 6.

The screenplay will be written by Skip Woods and Michael Finch, the same duo that wrote “A Good Day To Die Hard”, and the film will be directed by Aleksander Bach, who makes his feature film debut after directing some high profile commericials.

The Hitman series tells the story of the very lethal Agent 47, a renowned gun-for-hire who is highly sought after for “jobs” by the rich and powerful. A clone created to be the perfect assassin, the first Hitman game chronicles 47’s first exploits, where he works for the mysterious International Contact Agency. He is sent on a mission to eliminate crime bosses before he is betrayed and discovers his origins.

Eliminating his enemies, he tries to leave his assassin past behind on the second game, but is once again drawn to it when his mentor is kidnapped.

Deciding to return to the game full time, the next series of Hitman games put Agent 47 in troubled situations, but he always manages to get out and successfully complete his missions. The latest game, Hitman: Absolution, was released last November 20, 2012, with another new installment coming and in the works by Square Enix.

No release date has been given yet for “Agent 47”, but it will most likely have a 2014-2015 release window after Paul Walker finishes promoting Fast and the Furious 6. — DVM, GMA News
