Teenage suspect in gruesome hacking of Pinay in Palau gets 30 years in jail
PALAU -- The suspect in the gruesome hacking of a Filipina worker in June 2011 in Palau was sentenced to 30 years in jail on Friday last week. Palau Chief Justice Chief Justice Arthur Ngiraklsong sentenced Amador Osima a.k.a. Amador Misech for the death of Filipina worker Virginia Ventura. Osima was found guilty of second-degree murder by the first ever jury trial on October 16 last year. Osima was 17 years old when he committed the hacking. In the sentencing order, it was also stated that Osima should not be paroled until completing a mental health evaluation that shows he is no longer a danger to society. The Republic through Attorney General Victoria Roe and Assistant Attorney General Brentley Foster has asked a life sentence for Osima. In their brief remarks, they stated that Ventura suffered from injuries before dying and that the convict has not shown remorse. They also noted that Osima’s criminal history showed continued criminal behavior despite several treatments. On the defense side, Osima’s counsel, Siegfried Nakamura, asked for lesser sentence due to the convict’s difficult childhood. Ngiraklsong told Osima that he was a danger to the community and sentenced him to 30 years of imprisonment. - Bernadette Carreon, VVP, GMA News
