DBM releases P10B to DPWH for nationwide classroom construction

March 6, 2013 4:30pm
The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has approved the release of P10 billion to the Department of Public Works and Highways for the construction of basic educational facilities such as classrooms in a move to address the nationwide 66,800-classroom shortage.

“This release is in line with the Aquino administration’s goal to close the nationwide classroom gap this year. By building enough classrooms and facilities that meet our students’ requirements, we can further enhance the learning environment in our public schools and give Filipino schoolchildren better leverage for academic excellence,” said Budget Sercretary Florencio Abad in a statement Wednesday.

Abad said that the funds will be used to construct, replace and complete kindergarten, elementary and secondary school buildings and educational facilities in areas with a shortage of classrooms.

The National Capital Region will receive the biggest share of the amount of P1.7 billion, followed by Region 4-A with P1.2 billion and Region 8 with P827.7 million.

The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will receive P683.8 million.

The funds were sourced from the Department of Education's fund for Basic Education Facilities under the 2013 General Appropriations Act. The DPWH will construct the facilities in recipient schools identified by DepEd. — BM, GMA News
