Apple Inc. may cut shipments of its iPad mini tablet in the second quarter of 2013, a Taiwan-based tech site reported on Friday.

DigiTimes said multiple sources providing components for the iPad mini indicated Apple will ship only 10 to 12 million iPad minis for this period.

It said this is due partly to Apple's preparations for the next-generation iPad mini, which may be released as early as the third quarter.

But it also said the sources indicated the cut may also be partly due to increased competition from 7-inch tablets running Google's Android operating system.

DigiTimes said the decrease may be as much as 20 percent in April.

The report also said its sources claimed Apple adjusted shipments for its iPad to 33 million in 2013, and iPad mini to 55 million.

But a separate report on PC Magazine noted DigiTimes may have a "spotty record when it comes to Apple rumors."

PC Mag quoted IDC as saying the iPad, iPad mini and iPhone 5 combined make up 20.3 percent of all connected devices in the fourth quarter of 2012. — TJD, GMA News
