Twitter will launch this weekend a new standalone music application, a tech site reported Friday (Manila time).

A report on All Things Digital said the app can suggest artists and tracks to users based on criteria such as the Twitter accounts a user follows.

"Users will be able to listen to clips of music from inside the app, using third-party services like iTunes, Soundcloud; they will also be able to watch music videos provided by Vevo, the music video service owned by Universal Music and Sony," AllThingsD said.

It added that "Twitter had acknowledged it acquired the 'We Are Hunted' music recommendation service had its staff work on the new app."

AllThingsD also said that if Twitter launches the app this weekend as rumored, the timing "couldn’t be more appropriate."

It noted this weekend kicks off Coachella, the huge music festival put on in the middle of the California desert every year.

The festival attracts some of the music industry’s top talents, it noted. — RSJ, GMA News
