Thunderbolt, Intel's device interconnectivity controller, may soon go twice as fast as early as 2014 when the next-generation chip starts rolling out.
A report on tech site Mashable said Intel announced its next-generation Thunderbolt controllers at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas.
Code-named Falcon Ridge, the upcoming controller allows data transfer speeds of 20 Gbps data throughput, both ways, Mashable said.
"That means, for example, that video professionals will be able to display and transfer 4K video simultaneously," it said.
It added Intel may start production in late 2013 and ramp up in 2014.
Thunderbolt is a dual protocol I/O innovation that presently allows data transfer of 10Gbps and offers daisy-chaining to multiple devices.
Also, Intel said that it allows thinner and lighter laptops without sacrificing I/O performance, and extends to reach other I/O technologies by using PCIe-based adapters. — TJD, GMA News
