Amateur Cyna Rodriguez came through with a three-under-par 69, but it was newly-turned professional Jayvie Agojo who took the driver's seat in the first round of the inaugural ICTSI Ladies Philippine Golf Tour at The Country Club in Calamba, Laguna.
Agojo’s 70 was prioritized as this was a pro tournament. She quickly produced three birdies in six holes, then added an easy four and a half-foot putt for birdie to go 4-under. However, she bogeyed Nos. 12 and 15 to settle for a two-under-par.
The new ICTSI PGT for the country’s lady golfers offers a prize of money of P500,000, of which 20 percent goes to the winner. For the maiden event, it drew a total of 17 pros including former ladies open champions Agojo and Heidi Chua.
Rodriguez, who competed in the Queen Sirikit Cup last month, stormed to birdies on the first and fifth holes before stumbling to her only bogey on the sixth. She gained two strokes with birdies on the 10th and 17th for a 69.
Tied on second place with Agojo, the Santi Cup individual titlist in 2011, was Miya Legaspi.
The 14-year-old Legaspi held joint leadership with Rodriguez after 15 holes. However, she missed the green on the 16th for a bogey and dropped to a share of second with Agojo.
Ex-national team member Anya Tanpinco, looking fit and trim, still has game left in her, she carding a one-under-par 71. Dottie Ardina, who went as low as 4-over, rallied late, highlighted by an eagle on the 15th for an even 72.
Princess Superal followed with 73 for solo sixth. Lovelyn Guioguio, Sarah Ababa and Pauline del Rosario, 14, were bunched on 75s. Sofia Chabon, 12, was tied for 14th with a 76. - RAF, GMA News
